commonplace book entry 10

My host dad's friend from high school is in the hospital. My host dad got a call late saturday night, his friend had been staying at my host dad's country home in Gifu, and apparently fell of the second floor of the house. As my host mom told me "He was probably very drunk." My host dad told me that his friend injured his back, his head, and his arm, and he can't move the lower half of his body. These next few days are apparently the critical days that determine whether he lives or dies.
I think that this situation is what gave our conversations a weird twist.
My host parents were telling me about Mizutani sensei's son, who will be getting married by the end of the year. They were complaining about his late marriage (he is 40 years old), and they asked me what age people get married in America. I explained to them in broken Japanese that people get married at many different ages, and I didn't know what age was most common. They told me that in Japan, younger is better.
They then asked me at what age I wanted to get married. I told them that I did not yet know, so they had a little conversation amongst each other about when I would get married and have kids. Then my host dad told me that when I have kids I have to bring them here to show my host parents.
Later, my host dad started smoking, and he always apologizes a lot for smoking in front of me, but this day he started talking about how bad it was for his health. He said that he probably only had 10 more years to live. He told me to come back and visit while he's alive. Then he told me how healthy my host mom is, and he told me to keep coming after 10 years, because my host mom will still be very "genki" even with my host dad gone.
